A speeding ticket stings twice: once when you pay the fine, and again when the demerit points land on your record. But many Alberta drivers don’t realize those points don’t have to stay there.
Alberta allows drivers to remove up to three demerit points by completing an approved defensive driving course—and you can now do it entirely online.
How Demerit Reduction Works in Alberta
Alberta Transportation permits drivers to complete an approved defensive driving course once every two years to reduce their demerit total by three points. The reduction applies to points already on your record, making it one of the few ways to actively repair your driving history.
For fully licensed drivers approaching the 15-point suspension threshold—or GDL drivers facing the stricter 8-point limit—those three points can be the difference between keeping and losing a licence.
Why Take the Course Online
Traditional classroom courses require a full day of attendance at a fixed time and location. Online delivery removes both barriers.
1. Learn on Your Schedule: Complete the course in the evenings, on a weekend, or in short sessions—whenever it works for you.
2. Any Device, Anywhere: The course is accessible 24/7 from a computer, tablet, or phone.
3. Immediate Enrollment: No waiting for the next scheduled classroom session. Register and start the same day.
What the Course Teaches
AJ Driving School’s online Defensive Driving Course teaches the trademarked SAFER System of Defensive Driving—a structured approach to spotting hazards early, managing space around your vehicle, and making decisions that prevent collisions before they develop.
Beyond the demerit reduction, most drivers finish the course genuinely better at anticipating what other road users will do. That’s the part that keeps paying off long after the points come off your record.
Who Should Take It
The course is valuable for drivers who have accumulated demerits, GDL drivers protecting a low threshold, professional drivers whose licence is their livelihood, and anyone whose insurance or employer requires defensive driving certification.
