If you’re new to driving in Alberta, the licensing system can feel like alphabet soup. Class 7, Class 5-GDL, full Class 5—what do they all mean, and how do you move from one to the next?
This guide breaks down Alberta’s Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) program step by step, so you know exactly where you are and what comes next.
Step 1: The Class 7 Learner’s Licence
The journey starts at age 14 in Alberta. To get a Class 7 licence, you must pass a knowledge test covering road signs, traffic laws, and safe driving practices, along with a vision screening.
With a Class 7, you can drive only with a fully licensed driver (18 or older with a full Class 5 or higher) in the front passenger seat. You must hold this licence for at least one year before taking a road test.
Step 2: The Class 5-GDL (Probationary) Licence
After holding your Class 7 for a year and turning 16, you can take the basic road test. Passing it earns you a Class 5-GDL licence, which lets you drive independently—with conditions.
GDL drivers face a lower demerit threshold (8 points instead of 15), a zero alcohol tolerance, and cannot serve as the accompanying driver for a learner. You must spend at least two years at this stage.
Step 3: The Full Class 5 Licence
Alberta removed the advanced road test requirement, which means GDL drivers who complete their two-year probationary period without suspensions can now transition to a full Class 5. Requirements have changed over the years, so it’s worth confirming the current process with Alberta registries when you’re close to eligibility.
How Driver Training Fits In
Professional instruction helps at every stage. Before the knowledge test, structured lessons build the foundations. Before the basic road test, in-car training with a licensed instructor is the single most effective preparation available.
AJ Driving School offers programs for every stage of the GDL journey, from first-time learners in Edmonton to GDL drivers in Sherwood Park, St. Albert, and Spruce Grove preparing for their road test.
